Why not just waive him at the end of camp? Utica could use him, and he'd be a good call up if injuries hit. Seems a lot more like the Cory buyout and Butcher trade. Devils internal Budget.
It's not. Why pay a guy 1.8 million to not play for you when you can pay 1/3 of that? People keep forgetting that the NHL is ultimately a business. Has nothing to do with being cheap or having an internal budget. Saving 1.3 million dollars on a player you won't be using in the NHL is smart business. It doesn't make you cheap. Could be a callup for injuries? Sure, so could half a dozen other guys that the organization wants to get a look at.
They would be using him. He'd be in the AHL. And were they smart to buy out Cory? I mean we coulda used him after Crawford bailed. Or how about wasting a 5th to trade Butcher? We have cap space, its not like Harris is hard up for money. And yeah, they're a sports business that makes money and hasn't competed in ten years while penny pinching.
I think a big part of trading butcher was giving him a shot where he would be a regular instead of a scratch. That's usually not good form when dealing with a college player that chose your team at free agency using the college loophole.
