One of my favorite things to do each year is share breakout picks.

With the 2023-24 campaign just around the corner – and many fantasy leagues drafting this month – I figured now was a good time to write about a few guys I’m high on this year.

Let’s take a look at three Metro Division youngsters poised to make their mark.

Kent Johnson - Columbus Blue Jackets

There was a lot to like in Johnson’s rookie campaign. On a team that was overridden by injuries – and lacking both high-end talent as well as depth - Johnson was able to hit the ground running.

He tallied 16 goals and 40 points while posting higher offensive GARs than all but Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine up front. Pretty good; and there’s reason to believe more is coming.

For one, Johnson was fairly unlucky as a rookie. He showed flashes of Dawson Mercer in that he didn’t record many secondary points – he had only four A2s at 5v5 – and his individual points percentage was a little low as a result (61%).

One would think that number will be closer to 70% – perhaps even higher – during the 2023-24 campaign.

That could make a big difference, especially when you factor in the Blue Jackets should score a healthy chunk more than they did a season ago.

Patrik Laine played 55 games last year. In theory, he’ll be available for more this year. That would boost the offense. Having a center like Adam Fantilli in the mix will boost the offense. A healthy Zach Werenski will boost the offense. Adding a quality puck mover on the backend like Damon Severson should lead to easier transitions out of the defensive zone and, you guessed it, a boost to the offense.

Natural progression + improved surroundings + a little more luck could lead to a very productive season for Johnson. I think 50-55+ points is in the cards.

Filip Chytil - New York Rangers
