By now it’s no secret I’m a big Damon Severson fan. Always have been, always will be.
He has provided the New Jersey Devils with good hockey for a long time now and a lot of people have looked past that because his mistakes tend to be more noticeable than with other players.
At the end of the day, there is a lot more good than bad in Severson’s game.
So why do I think the Devils should consider trading No. 28 before Monday’s deadline?
Severson’s trade value will never be higher
It seems fair to say Severson’s value is at an all-time high. At least it should be.
The 27-year-old blue liner is producing at an 11-goal, 46-point pace over 82 games. That would match his previous high in goals and set a new bar in terms of points.
Severson, of course, provides a lot of value outside of his offensive game. He is the most utilized penalty killer on a team with a very strong PK. He also logs 23:30 per night and plays against opposing team’s best players at even-strength.
Only Jonas Siegenthaler has spent more time vs elite competition; and he has played an extra game. Severson is right there.
Even if Severson’s production dips a bit down the stretch, we’re talking about a ~40 point defender who can handle himself vs top competition, contribute on the power play, and spearhead a successful penalty kill.
It’s not at all a stretch to say Severson is an above average contributor in every single aspect of the game. That makes him quite valuable.
