The New Jersey Devils have five players slated to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st, with Damon Severson serving as the headliner.
Severson has averaged 40.23 points per 82 games the past two seasons. He can reliably log 20+ minutes a night, contribute in any facet of special teams – he’s probably a better penalty killer than power play quarterback, believe it or not – and he is still just 28 years of age.
This free agent class is also very weak on defense, with almost every other notable having glaring warts at one end of the ice or another.
Translation: Severson is going to get paid. But it won’t be in New Jersey.
