The New Jersey Devils have re-signed a 23-year-old Swedish forward named Jesper; but not the one everyone’s waiting for.
Friday the Devils announced Jesper Boqvist accepted his one-year, two-way qualifying offer from the team, which will see him earn $874K in the NHL and $70K in the AHL.
A two-way deal does not mean Boqvist can be sent to Utica and pulled back whenever management pleases. It just means his salary is different and dependent on the league he’s playing in.
Boqvist will require waivers if the Devils wish to try and send him down; be it at the end of training camp or sometime during the season.
While it is more than reasonable to pencil Boqvist onto the roster this fall, his spot is not guaranteed. He’ll have to earn it.
Boqvist did show meaningful signs of improvement this past season. He was able to produce offense fairly consistently in the bottom-6, especially down the stretch.
On the whole, Boqvist found the scoresheet at a 15-goal, 34-point pace despite playing just over 13 minutes per game.
Boqvist was particularly efficient at scoring goals, netting 0.79 per 60 minutes at 5v5. That was the exact same rate as notables like David Perron, Tom Wilson, Brady Tkachuk; pretty good!
