The New Jersey Devils just put together one of their best 10-game segments of the season.
They posted a 7-3 record and +10 goal differential while dominating territorially. Only the Carolina Hurricanes managed a higher expected goal share than the Devils (59.38%) across all situations.
Let’s take a look at some players rising and, to a lesser extent, trending down.
Jack Hughes 📈
Jack has looked like one of the best players in the world of late. With his hand fully healed, and the added confidence from scoring the Olympic-winning goal, we have seen him reach a completely different level.
He has dominated at 5-on-5, carried a lot of the load in transition, and been a driving force on a power play that scores multiple goals seemingly every night.
He has outright commanded the puck and shown a lot of passion, whether it be engaging in battles or showing frustration on the bench when not able to make something happen.
It’s evident how badly he wants to not only win, but dominate – and he has done just that.
Hughes produced 17 points during this 7-3 stretch. Only Hart Trophy candidate Nikita Kucherov, who leads the league in points, out-paced Hughes.
Jacob Markstrom 📉
Markstrom has run very hot and cold this season. He has looked like a No. 1 goaltender at times and a buyout candidate at others. It’s been closer to the latter of late.
Markstrom has conceded 3+ goals in six straight starts and failed to clear a .900 save percentage in any of them.
Even holding the St. Louis Blues and Florida Panthers to one goal each at the beginning of this winning run, Markstrom still allowed 2.9 goals more than expected while posting an .886 save percentage.
