The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler to a five-year contract extension worth $3.4 million per season.
Siegenthaler, 25, was under contract for just one more year and could’ve hit the open market as soon as the summer of 2024.
This contract runs through his final season under team control (2023-24) and buys up four UFA years.
All told, Siegenthaler is locked up for the next six seasons and will earn $18.2 million total. That is not much to pay for a top-4 defender who has signed for the entirety of his prime.
While Siegenthaler is unlikely to provide much value offensively – as evidenced by his career totals (27 points through 175 games) – he makes up for it tenfold with his defensive prowess.
That’s why Dom’s player cards have Siegenthaler’s market value at nearly $5 million per season.
As this card illustrates, Siegenthaler has developed into one of the best pure defenders in the sport.
Evolving-Hockey had Siegenthaler’s even-strength defensive game worth 9.8 Goals Above Replacement during his debut season with the Devils.
