Last week we kicked off our annual player profile mini-series by diving into the Devils’ newest forwards, Ondrej Palat and Erik Haula.
John Marino finds himself next on the to-do list as we work our way through the roster.
Counting stats: 81 games played, 25 points (one goals, 24 assists), 20:38 average time on ice
5v5 underlyings: 0.85 points/60, -0.38 CF% Rel, -5.39 GF% Rel, -2.58 xGF% Rel, 99.4
2021-22 review: John Marino had a solid but unspectacular season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He logged more than 20 minutes per night and hovered between 50-52% in all major on-ice metrics.
While his relative impacts were not overly strong, it’s important to put the minutes Marino played into context. He spent 32.2% of his ice against top-tier competition, according to PuckIQ.
That’s more than high-end defensemen like Jakob Chychrun (31.0%), John Carlson (30.9%), Jared Spurgeon (30.2%), and Zach Werenski (29.3%), to name but a few.
It’s also worth noting Marino’s numbers during those difficult minutes were just as good – if not better – than those of other top Penguins defenders.
