Tom Fitzgerald added another big piece to the top-6 this summer, stealing Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a draft pick.
Toffoli is coming off a career year in which he produced 73 points while posting sparkling underlying metrics.
With the off-season fireworks behind us, and the league really starting to slow, I figured it was as good of a time as any to profile newcomers like Toffoli.
Let’s take a closer look at the season that was and what’s to come with the New Jersey Devils.
Counting stats: 82 games played, 73 points (34 goals, 49 assists), 16:37 average time on ice
5v5 underlyings: 2.41 points/60, +1.61 CF% Rel, +12.62 GF% Rel, +5.27 xGF% Rel, 1.007 PDO
2022-23 review: Tyler Toffoli started the season somewhat slowly, recording 13 points over his first 20 games of the campaign. He flipped a switch in late November and was as consistent as they come from that point forward, recording 60 points over the remaining 62 games.
Toffoli’s production wasn’t a byproduct of crazy high usage. It stemmed more from efficiency than a boatload of ice time.
He led the Flames in goals and points at 5v5 despite slotting sixth among the forward group in total ice.
Toffoli averaged 1.14 goals and 2.41 points per 60 minutes of 5v5 play. For perspective of how good those outputs were, Toffoli equalled Elias Pettersson in the former and Leon Draisaitl in the latter. Yeah.
