A couple notes on all the talk surrounding a pair of star centers:

On Dylan Larkin

The New Jersey Devils were not one of three teams Larkin put on his trade list but that doesn’t mean they can’t get involved.

It’s expected Larkin will be asked to expand his list to give Steve Yzerman more flexibility to facilitate a trade, which could open the door for New Jersey to get involved.

An added bonus would be Detroit pivoting and accepting a younger package that prioritizes the long-term outlook rather than the here and now.

Max Bultman outlined that possibility at The Athletic.

You can argue the Red Wings’ path to success in the next few years was already narrow. And from that perspective, trading the near-30-year-old Larkin for some combination of young players, picks and prospects could be seen as a tough but necessary reset.

If Yzerman opts to go down that road, the Devils have a better chance of making something work.

They have an abundance of tradeable assets that fit the mould, although some other teams will have more to offer down the middle.

Dawson Mercer (24) is a versatile utility forward who has averaged 20.6 goals per season and never missed a game.

Simon Nemec (22) just scored 11 goals in 68 games despite playing mostly on the third pairing and second power play unit.

Seamus Casey (22) is a gifted offensive defenseman and productive AHLer waiting for an opportunity to become a full-time NHLer. He played his college hockey at Michigan, too.

The Red Wings already have Moritz Seider and

The Devils have other high-quality assets – most notably the 12th overall pick – that would be attractive to the Red Wings if they’re willing to take a step back.

It’ll be interesting to see if Larkin expands his list rather than playing hardball. There’s certainly reason to make a healthy push for Larkin if he’s willing to play in New Jersey.
