The New Jersey Devils will be busy on Day 2 of the draft. They’re slated to pick seven times, including five in the top-115.
I’m going to be updating this post with tidbits on their selections.
Pick 114: C Gustav Hillstrom (Brynas, J20/SHL)
Hillstrom had a really solid season with Brynas U20 program, ranking 2nd on the team in scoring with 38 points in 43 games. Only Viktor Eriksson, who turned 20 last month, outscored Hillstrom.
While his goal outputs aren’t bad, he does not generate shots at a high rate and focuses more on creating offense for his linemates. Playmaking is his calling card.
He is also a very good in the dot. He won more than 60% of his draws in the U20 league and 52% spanning 18 pro games in the SHL. That is very impressive for someone who didn’t turn 18 until halfway through the season.
At 114, I like rolling the dice on a Hillstrom.
Pick 99: G Trenton Bennett (Kemptville, CCHL)
