The longest tenured member of the New Jersey Devils, Damon Severson, is unlikely to be around a whole lot longer.
Severson is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in less than a year’s time. While he is eligible to sign an extension at any point, there has been little talk of substance.
On July 8th Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald told me the team is “in early discussions with the potential UFA’s” and nothing more. I have confirmed there have been no further contract talks with Severson’s camp.
Since that point, though, Fitzgerald used the 2nd overall pick on Simon Nemec, a highly touted right-handed defenseman.
He also selected Seamus Casey, an agile and intelligent right-shot defenseman, with the 46th pick. Casey was seen as a 1st round talent by HockeyProspect.
So, the Devils spent their premium draft capital on a couple of high-ceiling right-handed defenders. I know that opened some eyes with regard’s to Severson’s future in New Jersey.
