The New Jersey Devils conclude their season Monday night against the New York Islanders. Here are a few notes to get you set for the game:
Hands full with Horvat
Does Bo Horvat hold a grudge against the Devils for trading the pick that landed him in Vancouver? You would certainly think so based on how he feasts on New Jersey.
He has scored eight goals over his last six games against the Devils and has put forth three multi-goal performances in that span.
He always seems to torch the Devils and there’s plenty of reason to believe that will continue in this one.
The Devils are not defending well right now. At 5v5 they sit 28th in expected goals against and 30th in shots against since the trade deadline. That puts them in company with teams like the Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Canadiens, which is not great.
Suffice to say, the Islanders’ top line featuring Horvat, Mathew Barzal, and…Casey Cizikas is in a great spot to have a field day.
Believe it or not, that trio has posted ridiculously good offensive numbers since being assembled. The Isles are generating 87 attempts, 40 chances, and 4.43 goals per 60 minutes with that unit on the ice.
With the way the Devils are defending, and Horvat’s line firing on all cylinders, Jake Allen is going to have his hands full.
5v5 offense has to be there
