A few notes to get you set for New Jersey vs Buffalo:
It’s time!
Luke Hughes, one of the best prospects in the world of hockey, is slated to make his NHL debut tonight against the Sabres.
To say that his arrival is exciting would be an understatement. Hughes produced 87 points in 81 games over the course of his two seasons in Michigan, which is ridiculous production for a teenage defenseman.
He possesses all-world skating ability, offensive instincts, and is the perfect fit for the way the Devils play.
Although there will undoubtedly be some growing pains along the way, there’s every reason to believe Hughes can step in and hold his own against NHL competition right now.
This will be Hughes’ first, and potentially only, chance to prove that in advance of the playoffs.
I don’t see him factoring in too much in the here and now but a good game against Buffalo – and perhaps Washington as well – could give Lindy Ruff the confidence needed to throw Hughes into the lineup if and when an injury arises; or the team simply needs a spark.
I also think the matchup is very conducive to Hughes hitting the ground running and finding early success.
The Sabres play a very fast-paced, high-event brand of hockey that should benefit a player of Hughes’ skill set.
Over the past 10 games, only the Flames and Sharks posted a higher combined xG than the Sabres at 5v5.
