The New Jersey Devils return to action this afternoon against the San Jose Sharks. Here are a few notes to get you set for the game:
Time to get right
The Devils have not started their six-game road trip the way they wanted, dropping each of the first three games. Luckily, they have perhaps the best matchup imaginable as they look to get things back on track.
San Jose has struggled defensively all season long and they are showing no signs of improvement.
The Sharks have allowed 2.97 expected goals per 60 minutes of 5v5 play over the last 10 games. That is just 0.01 ahead of the Seattle Kraken, who sit dead last in that span.
They’ve also controlled just 37% of the high-danger chances, which is the worst mark in the league. No other team sits below 41%.
As much as it has felt like things have crashed down for the Devils of late, they rank 1st – yes, 1st – in the NHL with a 58.79 HDCF% over the past 10 games.
They’ve largely created chances while doing a great job of suppressing them. It just hasn’t shown through on the scoreboard.
While the Sharks possess some quality young talent, it’s not a coincidence this team has won just 12 times through 41 games.
They are very bad – especially defensively – and a side the Devils should be able to take advantage of.
End the drought
