G4 New Jersey Devils vs. New York Islanders: Start with a bang
The Devils have come out lifeless three games in a row – and they've had all week to chew on it. Expect a different result this time around.

The New Jersey Devils are back in action Friday night after an extended layoff. Let’s dive into some notes to get you set for their date with the New York Islanders:
A strong start is key
Being at your best from the word go is always important. As the Devils have shown us through the first few games, it’s very difficult to get results when you come out sluggish and consistently spot your opponent multiple goals.
It’s a recipe for disaster against the Islanders, especially. They play a very structured and conservative brand of hockey and are very difficult to break down when they can get a lead and lean on their strengths (defense and goaltending).
That’s evident in the numbers. Last season they conceded just 2.05 goals per 60 minutes at 5v5 while leading. Only the Winnipeg Jets – backstopped by an elite netminder of their own in Connor Hellebuyck – did a better job of keeping the puck out while playing from ahead.
We all know the Devils do not have their mojo offensively right now. A lot of their best players have failed to generate chances with any regularity, let alone turn them into points. They can’t afford to spot the Islanders a couple of goals and expect to get a result.
The hill is simply too big to climb against Ilya Sorokin, who is 6-3-0 with a .926 save percentage against the Devils since entering the league.
I have to imagine starts were a big point of emphasis for Lindy Ruff this week. The Devils put together three dreadful opening frames and were forced to chew on them while sitting idly for the past few days.
I expect a much more determined effort early on.
It’s Timo Time
