Five things to watch when the New Jersey Devils take on the Columbus Blue Jackets:
A prime bounce back spot
The Devils saw their three-game winning streak snapped last time out. Luckily, Columbus is one of the best opponents you could ask for with hopes of getting back on track.
The Blue Jackets have won just three of their last 10 games and they’ve played miserable hockey in that span. Their defense, in particular, has struggled.
No team has allowed more shots on goal per 60, be it at 5v5 or across all gamestates. Those aren’t just low percentage shots, either. They’re quality looks. As such, the Blue Jackets sit 29th in expected goals against/60 over this spell.
Making matters worse is Zach Werenski recently went on the COVID list. He’s far and away the best player on their blueline and he logs well over 26 minutes per game. Suffice to say, his absence will be felt.
Jack Hughes is firing on all cylinders right now and Nico Hischier is expected back in the lineup. While New Jersey’s roster is a little thinned out due to injuries and COVID issues, they still have the horses to take advantage of this struggling Blue Jackets defense.
Look for the Devils – led by the big boys – to get back on track.
