A few notes to get you set for New Jersey vs Philadelphia:
No-event hockey
There’s low-event hockey, and then there’s no-event hockey. The Philadelphia Flyers have played a healthy dose of the latter of late.
Over the last 10 games, they have been among the worst teams at creating 5v5 chances and among the best at suppressing them. Put simply, nothing is happening in their games. Nothing.
Only the Colorado Avalanche – who are missing their entire roster – have leaned more heavily into the no-event hockey approach.
Now, this isn’t surprising by any stretch of the imagination. John Tortorella is known for coaching teams that try and drag you into knife fights and the talent – or lack there of – on Philadelphia’s roster gives him no reason to get away from that.
It’s no secret how the Flyers are going to attack this game. They’ll be looking to slow the Devils through the neutral zone, take away the middle of the ice, and rely on Carter Hart to do the rest.
If they can turn this into a slow, low-chance game, there is a better chance for variance to do its thing and the team with (significantly) less true talent to win.
The Devils will need to be quick, and accurate, with their passes to pull apart Philadelphia’s clogging defensive setup and get by the 3,008 layers.
As much as we all love the Hughes 1v4 rushes, that’s exactly the kind of thing the Flyers will be hoping to force.
