Kick ‘em while they’re down 🦶
The New York Rangers are going through it right now. They have won just four of their past 10 games, in large part due to 5v5 struggles and truly horrendous defensive play.
They have allowed shots at a higher clip than every team in the league. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the quantity is also attached to quality. The Rangers rank 30th in expected goals against over the last 10.
Nothing head coach Peter Laviolette is trying has mitigated the issues we’re seeing in the defensive zone.
Each of the three current defense pairings is getting caved in and allowing expected goals at a high clip.
New Jersey should be chomping at the bit to get a piece of this Rangers defense. The Devils are firing on all cylinders offensively, ranking 2nd in 5v5 expected goals generated over the last 10 games.
Factor in their power play is as dangerous as any in the league this season and keeping the Devils offense in check is a miserably difficult task.
Given the trajectories both teams are on, Igor Shesterkin’s likely to have a lot on his plate in this one.
