Five things to watch when the New Jersey Devils take on the Philadelphia Flyers:
Shooting mentality
Jack Hughes ranks 11th on the Devils in shot attempts per 60 this season. He started the year pretty trigger shy – as evidenced by the numbers – but that mentality is starting to change.
Hughes has generated 22 shot attempts and 17 scoring chances over the last four games. Both totals lead the Devils.
The Devils need him to produce at the best of times. With Nico Hischier in COVID-19 protocol, it’s even more imperative Hughes finds the scoresheet consistently.
He doesn’t have the best individual matchup tonight – he’s going to see a lot of Sean Couturier – but, as a team, the Flyers have been one of the league’s worst defensive sides from start to finish.
Look for Hughes to be heavily involved in the offense; and not just as a facilitator for his linemates.
He’s really starting to rip the puck. A beautiful goal against the Islanders last time out should only give him confidence to keep going.
