A Thanksgiving feast

The Devils are the best power play team in the history of hockey when Jack Hughes is in the lineup. Am I exaggerating? You can decide.

With Hughes on the ice, the Devils have scored 17 goals in 38 minutes. That equates to 26.4 goals per 60 minutes.

For perspective of how absurd those outputs are, the Oilers were an absolute force on the man advantage a season ago and scored 16.22 goals per 60 with Connor McDavid on the ice.

I repeat, a historically good Oilers power play managed 16.22 goals per 60 with a 150 point player pulling the strings. Yeah.

What’s crazy is Hughes’ on-ice metrics in terms of shot generation, expected goals, etc. are higher across the board than what McDavid managed last season.

Put simply, a healthy Jack Hughes means an extraordinary Devils power play – even if some regression may come moving forward.

The Devils are in a prime spot to do some serious damage on the power play in this one. The Red Wings rank 26th in expected goals against per 60 while undermanned. They are giving up quality chances in bulk and having a miserable time killing penalties off.

They also take a lot of them. Only the Ducks, Canadiens, and Avalanche have averaged more penalties per game than the Red Wings this season.

If the Red Wings want to parade to the box in this game, they are going to pay a big, big, price.
