The New Jersey Devils were not able to clinch a playoff spot Tuesday night – let’s leave it at that – but the news of the day surrounded one of the team’s best players.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe noted defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who hasn’t played since March 4th against the Dallas Stars, could return during the 1st round of the playoffs.
Now, there’s a difference between something having a chance and actually happening. There’s a chance I won’t have an energy drink tomorrow; it doesn’t mean that’s what will happen.
But it’s encouraging that the door is open on a Hamilton return against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils could really use him. I’d go as far as to say desperately so.
Hamilton has his flaws, sure, but the guy hasn’t suited up in more than a month and he still ranks tied for 5th among healthy Devils in points and 4th in assists. Meanwhile, Timo Meier is the only player in the team’s lineup with more shot attempts.
The Devils have had a difficult time generating offense – particularly at 5v5 – for months and Hamilton is a difference maker offensively at his position.
He’s also an excellent play driver and has helped the Devils outscore opponents by 11 at 5v5 this season, which is the best mark of any defenseman on the team. Last I heard scoring more goals than the other team is a good thing.
Being able to plug Hamilton back into the lineup would be huge; and not just because he’s really good.
Hamilton rejoining the lineup would mean Simon Nemec/Seamus Casey coming out, which is addition by subtraction in the largest sense imaginable.
