A few notes from New Jersey’s crucial Stadium Series win over Philadelphia:
Daws stood tall
Another game, another quality start from Nico Daws. I thought he was once again one of the best players on the ice and as pivotal as anybody in the Devils getting two points.
Philadelphia tested Daws early and often, mustering up 48 shots on goal in defeat. Part of that bizarre number was score effects. Part of it was a lot of shots from the defense (17, to be exact). Part of it was the simple ‘shoot it and get to the net’ approach of a John Tortorella coached team. But 48 shots is 48 shots – and Daws was there to stop 45 of them.
I thought Daws was especially great in the 2nd period. The Flyers put the petal through the floor in the middle frame, pushing and pushing and pushing to crawl back into the game. Daws made a handful of excellent saves to keep the Devils ahead and allow them to regain their footing.
Fast forward a few minutes and the Devils found themselves leading by as many as three goals – albeit for a very short time – when the game could’ve easily been tied on merit.
Daws made all the saves he should have, stopping 20 of 20 low danger shots. He was also a perfect 7 of 7 against Grade A opportunities.
He did his job and then some, ensuring the Devils led for all but 32 seconds and the game was never really as close as it should’ve been.
He is playing terrific hockey and giving the Devils a real opportunity to make a necessary climb up the standings.
Hischier led the way
