A few observations from the New Jersey Devils’ franchise record-tying 13th consecutive win:
86 and 63 were lights out
In a game that featured Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl – two perennial Hart Trophy and Art Ross candidates – I thought the Devils had the two most dynamic players on the ice in Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt.
Those two tend to make magic every night but they were especially dominant against the Oilers on Monday.
The level of link-up play, and chemistry, shown was borderline ridiculous. Jack was a zone entry machine, drawing defenders to him in bulk before often dishing to a wide open Bratt.
Then, it was on 63 to either attack the open space created or defer to teammate elsewhere in the offensive zone for a chance of their own. He often elected to distribute the puck, quickly finding the open man for chance after chance.
A lot of times it felt like the Devils were running drills with those two on the ice. The passing was so fluid and they did whatever they wanted; it was as if they were operating around a bunch of pylons.
Bratt (nine) and Hughes (seven) combined for 16 shot assists at 5v5 alone. For perspective, no other Devils player registered more than four. They facilitated everything and put on a passing clinic. It was truly a treat to watch.
