The New Jersey Devils rebounded in a big way Wednesday night, picking up a shutout victory over the rival Philadelphia Flyers.
Here are a few observations from the game:
Timo Meier set the tone 😈
I loved, loved, loved, what I saw out of Timo Meier on Wednesday night. From the drop of the puck until the final whistle, he was as involved and engaged as anybody on the ice.
Dawson Mercer took a good hit on one of the first shifts of the game and Meier immediately stepped in to defend his guy.
That was just a sign of things to come from Meier, who displayed his full power-forward skill set.
He was effective in the cycle game and working below the dots. He was physical, landing a couple of sturdy hits and mixing it up after the whistle on several occasions.
His passing was excellent. He led the Devils in 5v5 shot assists and created several excellent chances for his teammates, most notably finding Mercer backdoor on the goal that chased Samuel Ersson and really put a dagger into the Flyers.
Meier also helped the Devils dominate territorially. No Nico Hischier, no problem; Meier took matters into his own hands and was the driving force on a line that controlled well over 70% of the attempts, 60% of the expected goals, and found the back of the net twice.
Meier showed early on that he wasn’t going to take any crap and was going to dish out as much as he took. The Devils followed that lead.
Jake Allen stepped up 🪜
