The New Jersey Devils are 18-29-5. You didn't need to be reminded, but I promise I did not write that with cruel intentions.

There's no doubt their season has not gone as many expected. The main reason for that has been goaltending — giving up 38.26 goals above expected will doom even the best teams. 

Even though the Devils' goaltending situation has been in disarray for pretty much the whole season, the team has improved from 2020-21; specifically at even strength and on the penalty kill.

Let's take a look at those improvements and how it shows the team is closer to taking a step forward than their record indicates.
